Michigan online gambling revenue hits record $301.4 million in May

Online gambling revenue in Michigan reached a record $301.4 million in May, helped by year-on-year growth across both the state’s iGaming and mobile sports betting markets.

May’s monthly gross receipts surpassed the previous high of $260.5 million, set in March this year, by 15.8%. The Michigan Gaming Control Board also showed May was 26% above 2024 and 21.6% higher than this April.

Adjusted gross receipts, after promotional spending, hit $271.8 million, another state record. This was also 31.4% higher than May last year and 4.6% above April this year.

iGaming revenue clears $250 million in May

Online slots and table games drew the most revenue in May, with the gross total for iGaming hitting $251.5 million. This was 26.6% higher year-on-year.

The adjusted figure for this segment amounted to $236.2 million, up 31.9% on the previous year.

BetMGM and MGM Grand Detroit retook the lead in the sector, having slipped to second in April. The partnership generated $7.4 million in gross receipts and $63.3 million adjusted receipts during May.

FanDuel and MotorCity Casino, which led in Michigan in April, placed second with $65.9 million/$61.9 million. DraftKings and the Bay Mills Indian Community completed the top three with a split of $36.3 million and $34.1 million.

Commercial iGaming tax payments for the month reached $49.1 million. Detroit received a further $12.7 million, while tribal operators paid $5.8 million to governing bodies.

Sports betting revenue rises in Michigan

Turning to sports betting, gross receipts were 19.3% higher than last year at $50 million. Adjusted receipts were also up 27.7% to $35.6 million, helped by handle increasing 12.3% year-on-year to $386.1 million.

In terms of hold, the statewide figure for May stood at 12.95%, based on gross receipts.

As for operators, FanDuel and MotorCity Casino retained a healthy lead in the sports betting market. Gross receipts topped $22.6 million and handle $139.5 million, resulting in a 16.2% hold.

DraftKings and the Bay Mills Indian Community remained second with $12.5 million from a $108.2 million handle, leaving a hold of 11.55%. BetMGM and MGM Grand Detroit completed the top three with $7.4 million off $54.7 million for a 13.73% hold.

Sports betting tax payments to the state hit $2 million while Detroit received $651,441.

Detroit casino revenue hits $114 million

The MGCB also published data on the three commercial casinos in Detroit: MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino and Hollywood Casino at Greektown. Total revenue was $114 million, up 0.4% year-on-year.

Some $112.7 million of this came from tables and slots, while the other $1.3 million was attributed to sports betting. MGM again had the largest market share at 47%, ahead of MotorCity with 30% and Hollywood Casino with 23%.

The casinos paid $9.1 million in state gaming taxes and $13.4 million to Detroit for casino activity. They also paid $48,431 in state retail sports betting tax and paid $59,193 to Detroit.
