Alberta Online Casinos Are Live: What You Need To Know

27

Alberta online casinos are now live with dozens of brands getting the OK to launch on day 1.

The province is the second to expand past its lottery offerings and open up gaming to private companies after Ontario launched its regulated industry in April 2022. Online sportsbooks in Alberta are also live with details about the launch available here.

Not every brand given the green light to go live at midnight will do so, but many of the top Alberta online casino and sports betting brands launched preregistration offers and are already operating.

Top online casinos in Alberta

Some of the biggest names in U.S. online gaming will be fighting for their slice of the Alberta pie.

The top two brands in the U.S., DraftKings and FanDuel, will no doubt be battling for the top market share in the province as they routinely do in the US. But it could be a lack of brand diversity that has them behind the ball.

Caesars and Penn Entertainment are taking a multi-brand approach to the market, one that has paid dividends so far in the online casino markets south of the Great White North. Caesars and Penn are both launching with combined sportsbooks and casinos (Caesars Sportsbook and theScore Bet) while Caesars is also launching its Caesars Palace and Horseshoe casino brands while Penn will have its theScore Casino and Hollywood brands.

Penn also has a distinct advantage with its home-grown brand of theScore, which has operated a popular sports media app in Canada since 2007. Penn management noted the brand recognition has helped its market share in Ontario and should do the same in Alberta with a similar number of app users in the two provinces.

Who else is in the mix?

BetMGM is no doubt vying for a top market share in Alberta as well, but it could be hard to break past the tier-one brands and those launching with a multi-brand effort. The same line of thinking goes for bet365, which has improved its online casino product in the lead up to this Alberta launch.

Rush Street Interactive‘s BetRivers platform will likely not spend the money needed to grab a large chunk of market share, but the company has proven it is plenty happy with the customer value it can get from the right customers.

Bally’s is a potential dark horse to pick up market share too. The brand is not as much of a household name as some of the others but it will be running a two-brand operation. Along with its signature Bally Bet brand, it will also launch the Monopoly Casino.

What games are available at Alberta online casinos?

All of the most popular casino games can be offered by online casinos in Alberta.

The province’s only legal online iGaming site before this launch, PlayAlberta, offers slots, table games, live dealer games.

The live dealer games could be where some brands shine the most. BetMGM, for example, said its live dealer content from a studio in the MGM Grand in Las Vegas “powers our Ontario business,” CEO Adam Greenblatt said in April.
