Belmont Stakes Odds 2023: Start Time, How to Bet, Horse Updates

The 2023 Belmont Stakes is this Saturday. Known as “The Test of the Champion,” the 1 ½-mile race is one of the most popular horse racing events of the year. Forte is the favorite among the Belmont Stakes odds, followed by Tapit Trice. Other top contenders include Angel of Empire and National Treasure, the winner of the 2023 Preakness Stakes. When is the Belmont Stakes? 

The 2023 Belmont Stakes takes place this Saturday at Belmont Park in New York. It’s the 12th race on the card, with post time set for 7:02 p.m. ET. Fox is the broadcast home for the event and will also offer coverage on the Fox Sports app. 

Redemption for Kentucky Derby scratch? 

Heading into the Kentucky Derby, Forte (5/2) was the early betting favorite coming off an exceptional prep season. On the morning of the race, he was scratched with a bruised foot and remained sidelined for the Preakness Stakes. 

Forte made his debut last May at Belmont Park, taking first place in a five-furlong Maiden Special Weight race. He moved on to Saratoga for the summer meet, finishing fourth in the Grade III Sanford Stakes. 

Beginning in September, Forte went on a run of five consecutive victories. Highlights included a win at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in November and a victory at the Florida Derby this past April.   

Preakness Stakes winner aiming for Belmont glory

This year’s Preakness Stakes featured just seven entrants. The headliner and favorite was Mage, the winner of the 2023 Kentucky Derby. National Treasure (5/1) was the second choice on the board for morning line odds and at post time. 

Trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by John Velazquez, National Treasure went on to win the Preakness in a time of 1:55.12 by a head over second-place finisher Blazing Sevens, with Mage finishing third. 

National Treasure was not in the field for the Derby. In advance of the Triple Crown races, his last appearance was a fourth-place finish at the Santa Anita Derby.

There are nine horses in the field for Belmont this year. A pair of trainers, both of whom skipped the Preakness, are responsible for five of the entrants. Todd Pletcher is taking two shots: presumptive favorite Forte and Tapit Trice (3/1). 

Brad Cox counters with a trio of runners: Tapit Shoes (20/1), Hit Show (10/1) and Angel of Empire (10/1). For the initial release of morning line odds, six of the entrants had a line of 10/1 or less. Pletcher and Cox are the trainers for four members of that group. 

Angel of Empire, Hit Show and Tapit Trice took part in the Derby, finishing in third, fifth and seventh place, respectively. Of the jockeys who will be leading the charge, Irad Ortiz, saddling Forte on Saturday, came in second at the Preakness with Blazing Sevens.  

The rest of the Belmont Stakes field

Here are the remaining entrants that will be in the running on Saturday. 

Arcangelo has won his last two races, including the Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park in May. Il Miracolo was a sixth-place finisher at the Florida Derby and picked up a victory last time out in an Allowance race at Gulfstream Park. Red Route One finished fourth at the Preakness, 4 ¾-lengths behind winner National Treasure.
