England’s Provisional Euro 2024 Squad Released; Rashford Left Off

England manager Gareth Southgate has announced his provisional 33-man roster for this summer’s European Championship.

The Three Lions are the favorites to lift the trophy and have revealed a star-studded squad featuring the likes of Harry Kane, Phil Foden, and Jude Bellingham.

However, Southgate shocked many England fans by leaving Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford out of his squad. We’ll break down the roster, highlight the key omissions, and discuss how England will line up for those considering how to bet on Euro 2024.

Breaking down England’s 33-man Euros roster

Southgate can only take 26 players to Germany for the Euros, so he will need to cut seven members to finalize England’s Euro squad by June 7.

  • Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal), James Trafford (Burnley).
  • Defenders: Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), Lewis Dunk (Brighton), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), Jarell Quansah (Liverpool), Luke Shaw (Manchester United), John Stones (Manchester City), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle), Kyle Walker (Manchester City)
  • Midfielders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Conor Gallagher (Chelsea), Curtis Jones (Liverpool), Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United), Declan Rice (Arsenal), Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace).
  • Forwards: Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Jarrod Bowen (West Ham), Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), James Maddison (Tottenham), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Ivan Toney (Brentford), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa).

Southgate has named five uncapped players in the 33-man squad: young goalkeeper James Trafford, Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, Liverpool duo Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah, and Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton. They are the most likely cuts to reach the 26-man roster, although Branthwaite has excelled for Everton this year.

Crystal Palace finished the season with a flourish, and Southgate responded by calling up Wharton, Dean Henderson, Marc Guehi, and Eberechi Eze. He has always placed his faith in youngsters since landing the England job, and this could be a breakout tournament for the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer.

Perhaps the biggest concern is the left side of England’s defense. Southgate named Luke Shaw to the squad, although he has not played since February after sustaining a muscle injury. He is the only left-footed defender on the team, as Southgate did not select Ben Chilwell. Kieran Trippier and Joe Gomez can play on the left, although they are far more comfortable at right-back, so that could be a potential area of weakness for England if Shaw does not recover in time.

However, the odds on England winning this tournament have shortened since opening and Southgate’s reveal of his squad. England’s Euro 2024 odds now sit at just .

Key players left out

The big news was Rashford’s omission from the squad. He has scored 17 goals in 60 games for England, and he played a starring role during the Three Lions’ 2022 World Cup campaign. Rashford was on fire last season, but his form has dipped dramatically this year.

The other key player to miss out is former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, who is now at Ajax. He offers experience, but he has also been struggling for form and fitness this season.

Other notable absentees include Chelsea trio Raheem Sterling, Reece James, and Chilwell, plus Bayern Munich’s Eric Dier and Dominic Solanke of Bournemouth. Jadon Sancho has appeared rejuvenated since joining Borussia Dortmund on loan, but he also misses out. Arsenal defender Ben White has declared himself unavailable.

Projecting England’s starting 11 for Euro 2024

Jordan Pickford is highly likely to keep his place in goal. Shaw will start at left-back if he can prove his fitness, with Trippier ready to take his place if necessary. Kyle Walker appears likely to get the nod at right-back, and Harry Maguire is likely to partner John Stones in central defense, despite Branthwaite’s impressive form.

Declan Rice will anchor the team in midfield. We could see Mainoo slot in alongside him, allowing Bellingham to play in a more advanced role, with Foden and Bukayo Saka deployed either side of Kane in attack.

However, many fans will hope to see a more attacking approach from Southgate. He could alternatively play Bellingham next to Rice in midfield, with Foden, Palmer, and Saka behind Kane, so it will be interesting to see who starts in England’s opener.
