Jets vs. Browns futures odds

The latest NFL futures odds provide some insight into the general expectations surrounding the Jets and Browns.

Looking back to last year, New York went 3-0 in exhibition games, while Cleveland went 1-2. For the regular season, the two clubs posted matching records of 7-10 and finished in last place in their respective divisions.

The Jets have been the subject of a lot of buzz throughout the offseason. In April, the club swung a trade with the Packers for Aaron Rodgers. Landing an elite arm has raised the bar, and many observers are now viewing the Jets as a potential contender.

The Browns could also take some steps forward this season. After going through the first 11 weeks of last season without Deshaun Watson due to a suspension, they’ll have their franchise QB under center on day one of the regular season.

While things could be looking up for both franchises, they also reside in two of the league’s most competitive divisions: the AFC East and AFC North. New York opens at home in Week 1 versus the Buffalo Bills, while the Browns host the rival Cincinnati Bengals.

Are any starters playing in the 2023 Hall of Fame Game?

It’s unlikely that we’ll see much — if any — playing time for starters on the Jets and Browns. The Hall of Fame Game is the first of four exhibition contests for both teams, so there’s ample time for key players to see some action in advance of the regular season.

Exhibition or not, there’s always the risk of injury when players step onto the field. Quite simply, it’s not worth the risk for either club, so we can expect the majority of playing time to go to rookies and players who are fighting for roster spots.

Looking back to last season’s preseason opener between the Jaguars and Raiders, we saw just that. The most notable offensive player to see extensive time was Las Vegas RB1 Josh Jacobs. He finished with five carries for 30 yards and two receptions for 14 yards.

Over that span, moneyline favorites have had the advantage with a record of 7-3 overall, including wins in the last six in a row. The favored side also has a slight 6-4 lead on the spread, while Under has been the correct call on totals in seven of the last 10 games.

Traditionally, the preseason is rather unpredictable due to the general uncertainty over playing time. However, there is one research point that has proven to be popular among those who like to wager on exhibition campaigns.

Some see head coach records in preseason games as an indicator of how the two sides may approach the contest. New York’s Robert Saleh is 5-0 overall in the preseason and 2-0 in openers. Cleveland’s Kevin Stefanski is also 2-0 in game one and 4-2 in total.
