North Carolina Mobile Betting Progress Inches Forward

There’s still no official launch date for legal mobile sports betting in North Carolina, as the state lottery’s sports betting committee didn’t discuss a timeline at Thursday’s meeting. 

The committee did, however, share that it wants operator applicants to submit proposed internal controls by the end of January. That’s a key step in the process of getting applicants ready to launch. 

Governor Roy Cooper recently suggested that the lottery’s goal is to make legal North Carolina betting apps available to customers prior to March Madness, which begins on March 19. The commission has previously said that a mobile betting launch will come after the Super Bowl on Feb. 11. North Carolina sports betting legislation requires mobile sportsbooks to be allowed to launch by mid-June, and the lottery expects to easily meet that deadline. 

Sports betting apps are expected to go live prior to brick-and-mortar facilities, which may have a staggered launch depending on when locations are ready to open their retail sportsbooks. 

Next steps

Eight sports betting operators are expected to be in the first batch of betting apps to go live in the coming months, as they submitted license applications prior to the lottery’s recommended Dec. 27 deadline. Those eight operators are:

The lottery commission meets on Wednesday, and it’s possible the group will discuss the first batch of applicants in some capacity. If that conversation doesn’t arise Wednesday, it’s likely that either the lottery or its sports betting committee will meet again in January for further discussion of the license applicants. 

Future January meetings may also include specifics on a launch timeline.

“With all the progress that’s been made, the commission expects to be in a position soon to announce when sports betting can begin in North Carolina,” a commission spokesperson said in a recent statement.
