Teams favored to sign Shohei Ohtani

There has been tons of speculation from writers and reporters on where Ohtani will fall. Below, we break down the top favorites and provide context for each landing spot. No matter where he goes, observers such as columnist Jon Heyman predict he could potentially get upward of $600 million.

Los Angeles Dodgers (-175)

There is not much of a surprise that the Dodgers are the top favorite to land Ohtani. With the team’s lineup already built around names like Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, Ohtani would fit right into the mix of superstars. Over the past six seasons, the Dodgers have four 100+ win seasons and have made the playoffs every one of those six years.

USA Today baseball columnist Bob Nightengale has reported that “The Chicago Cubs’ optimism of landing Shohei Ohtani has now significantly waned,” leaving the door open for teams such as the Dodgers. He also received a direct quote from Dodgers manager Dave Roberts “Clearly, Shohei is our top priority.”

Toronto Blue Jays (+150)

Recent news from The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal has swirled that Shohei visited the Blue Jays’ training facility in Dunedin, Florida, on Monday. The Blue Jays have a solid core lineup and have been looking for that missing piece to give them the final push. Young talent such as Vlad Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette could mix well with the new superstar.

Reports from Jon Heyman also stated that “Ohtani did tell some folks he knows before his probable Jays Florida visit he has a positive feeling about Toronto.” He also mentioned other cities and clubs in that statement. The Toronto Blue Jays are still highly in the mix and could score big if Ohtani decides to join them.

Chicago Cubs (+800)

Coming into this week, the news around the Chicago Cubs signing Shohei was still buzzing, but after multiple reports came out that optimism is waning, we can see a clear reason why they are the third favorite on this list. The Cubs are another team looking for the missing piece to give them a playoff push, especially with Marcus Stroman opting out of his three-year deal with the team.

San Francisco Giants (+1100)

It has been speculated that the next team Ohtani chooses could be on the West Coast due to his roots and family in Japan. The Giants could be a potential landing spot for Ohtani as well, and based on reports from the San Francisco Chronicle, the team may have met with him on Saturday.

The Giants have proven they are not afraid to spend money when it comes to landing superstar free agents, as they made a push for Aaron Judge before he ultimately decided to stay with the Yankees. At that time, they had offered Judge $360 million, but with the current offers around Ohtani, they would likely have to put up somewhere between $500 million and $600 million right now.

Los Angeles Angels (+1400)

The Angels are another West Coast team that Shohei could return to, but with the past couple of seasons, it seems unlikely he would decide to return. The Angels were seeking options for him at the trade deadline, but his UCL injury put a hiccup in most teams wanting him for half a season.

Now that Ohtani is a free agent, he is free to sign anywhere, and with the current odds, the Angels are just inside the top five favorites. Mike Trout is the team’s remaining superstar, and even with both of them, the Angels have not managed to make the playoffs in any of their last five seasons.
