Djokovic, Sabalenka defend Aussie Open titles

Hampered by a wrist injury, Novak Djokovic struggled at times during the first week of the Australian Open. But Djokovic declared himself healthy after trouncing Adrian Mannarino in the fourth round and will face Taylor Fritz of the U.S. in Monday’s quarterfinals.

Djokovic needs three more wins to capture a record 11th Australian Open men’s singles title. He is the overwhelming favorite at BetRivers, with odds of +108. On the women’s side, Aryna Sabalenka will face Barbora Krejcikova in the quarters. Sabalenka has odds of +148 to win her second straight title. Coco Gauff, the defending U.S. Open champion, is close behind at +180. None of the six remaining players have odds under +700.

Oilers look to extend winning streak

Last month, the Edmonton Oilers fell under .500 following a head-scratching start to the season. The Oilers, however, have responded with 13 straight victories, the longest of any Canadian team in NHL history. Edmonton can win their 14th straight on Tuesday with a win over Columbus.

With the winning streak, the Oilers have moved to third in the Pacific Division. The Oilers have odds of +900 at BetMGM to win the Stanley Cup. As of Monday, the Oilers are the second choice at BetMGM behind the Avalanche. The Penguins have the NHL record for consecutive wins with 17.

Las Vegas Sands reports Q4 earnings

Just before New Year’s, Mark Cuban completed the sale of a majority stake in the Dallas Mavericks to Dr. Miriam Adelson and Las Vegas Sands President Patrick Dumont. Since then, Cuban has confirmed the sale of a 108-acre land plot to the new Mavs’ owners, an area that could be used for a new NBA arena.

Las Vegas Sands (LVS) has lobbied heavily for the legalization of casino gambling in Texas, and investors could learn more about LVS’ lobbying plans on Wednesday’s earnings call.

National Treasure favored in Pegasus World Cup

With all due respect to the entries of this Saturday’s Pegasus World Cup, the field is a step below fields of the past. Billed in 2015 as an innovative way to transform horse racing in the winter season, the Pegasus has featured potential future Hall of Famers in Arrogate, Gun Runner, Knicks Go, and Life Is Good. But by 2020, the Stronach Group reduced a purse that once reached $16 million to a fraction of that at $3 million.

The sharp purse decrease and a rash of early retirements have tarnished the Pegasus. Still, there are some quality Grade I winners in Saturday’s field. National Treasure, the 2023 Preakness winner, will enter as the 9/5 morning line favorite. The race marks the first time the Pegasus will be held since Florida sports betting went live.

Lamar eyes first trip to Super Bowl

Lamar Jackson accounted for four touchdowns in the AFC divisional round to lead the Ravens to a dominating win over the Texans. On Sunday, Jackson will make his first appearance in the AFC Championship. He will face Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, a team that will return to the AFC title game for a sixth consecutive year. The Ravens opened as 3-point favorites at DraftKings; the total is 47.

In the NFC, the Lions are heading to the NFC Championship for the first time in more than three decades. The Lions can earn their first-ever trip to the Super Bowl with an upset road victory over San Francisco. 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel left Saturday’s win over the Packers in the first half with a shoulder injury. Samuel’s availability against the Lions will likely trigger line fluctuations throughout the week. The 49ers opened as 7-point favorites at ESPN BET; the total is 51.5.

On the futures market, the 49ers (+145) are the favorite to win the Super Bowl at FanDuel, followed by the Ravens and the Chiefs. FanDuel lists the Ravens as the second choice at +210, while the Chiefs have odds of +350 to repeat as Super Bowl champions. The Lions are the longshot of the four remaining teams at +700.

Have a good week, everyone!
